Babysitters

June 23rd, 2010 |

The summer will be here faster than you might think and you will have to find a suitable babysitter for your precious one. During the summer a lot of people especially students are looking for summer nanny jobs so finding a babysitter is easy but finding the right one for your baby is the key.

With the chaos of the holidays and the speed with which December moves, many parents forget this crucial part of the New Year’s Eve puzzle. Because the holiday season is hectic enough, here is a complete guide to finding and hiring a great babysitter for New Year’s Eve.

WHERE TO FIND BABYSITTERS ONLINE

Online babysitter sources generally fall into two distinct categories: free and fee-based.

Free services are appealing because they cost nothing, but the danger is that anyone could be using them. Choosing which babysitter service is right for you truly depends on your comfort level. If you’re considering a fee-based service, make sure you get what you pay for. A site like this should have:

Babysitters

  • Hundreds, if not thousands, of babysitters in your area for you to choose from
  • Good standing with the Better Business Bureau
  • Plenty of information on each babysitter, including photos, references and reviews
  • Safety features such as background checks, site security scans, profile privacy options, etc.
  • Easily accessible customer service representatives, through both email and phone
  • Good reviews on independent blogs, media sources and more

Sittercity.com, for example, has all of these things and also allows you to conduct a free search so you can see how many babysitters are in your area, how they have been rated/reviewed, what their schedules are and more.

WHEN TO POST YOUR BABYSITTING JOB

Once you choose which online babysitting network to go with, the first thing you’ll want to do is post a job. Posting a babysitting job allows you to tell babysitters exactly what type of sitter you are looking for and lets those sitters come to you. The best time to post a New Year’s Eve babysitting job is in the beginning of December.

Interesting, Sittercity polled parents two weeks before New Year’s Eve a few years ago and found that 77% still did not have their New Year’s Eve babysitter lined up. It’s a common procrastination among parents, which makes it even more important for you to be ahead of the curve so you’re not stuck in a last-minute scramble with all of the other sitter-searching families.

HOW TO POST YOUR BABYSITTING JOB

Posting a New Year’s Eve babysitting job requires a little more planning than a regular Saturday night out. The most successful parents — those who DO post their initial job in early December — will leave four weeks to find a babysitter.

The first post is therefore a "teaser" job that runs for the first two weeks with all the information you have at the time. You should then follow that teaser with the final job posting with all its specifics if the teaser does not bring in the perfect candidate.

This buys you two weeks to woo potential applicants and attempt to lock in the right babysitter as you gather job details, and the chance to post another job if your teaser fails.

WHAT TO PAY A NEW YEAR’S EVE BABYSITTER

Even babysitters like to celebrate New Year’s too; because of this, babysitters need extra (read: financial) incentive to forgo their own plans in favor of a New Year’s Eve babysitting job. To figure out what to pay, you must first decide if you will need the sitter for a few late-night hours or if you will need her overnight.

A few hours
If you plan on coming home after your New Year’s Eve celebration, you will pay your babysitter an hourly rate — a higher hourly rate than you’d normally pay. Most parents typically add an extra $5 to $10 per hour onto their standard hourly rate. If the children are allowed to stay up until midnight, you’ll want to fall on the higher end of that range to compensate the babysitter for keeping the children entertained the entire time.

Overnight
If you’ll be spending the night away from home, you won’t pay your babysitter an hourly rate all through the night; instead, you’ll want to offer a flat rate. To determine this flat rate, first figure out what the babysitter’s hourly rate would be between the time she comes over and 10pm. For example, if she comes over at 5pm and you typically pay her $10/hour, she would earn $50.

Then add a flat overnight rate — typically between $40 and $100 — to that number. Again, since this is a special New Year’s Eve babysitting job, you’ll want your rate to fall at the higher end of that scale. With the total hourly rate added to the overnight rate, you can clearly state the flat rate offer to your babysitter.

What you pay is up to you and your budget, so use this strategy as a guideline to determining a rate that both you and your babysitter are comfortable with.

Check out the Babysitter Rate Calculator linked to at the end of this article to see what the average, non-holiday pay is in your area.

Professional Babysitter

June 20th, 2010 |

The summer is approaching and agencies will start offering a summer nanny jobs. Here are some tips on how to choose the right babysitter during this summer.

Professional BabysitterChoosing a babysitter is a tough job. It is difficult to judge whether a babysitter candidate is truly the best person to care for your little ones. Each child has different needs, and you also want to make sure they are cared for in way consistent with your parenting style. One way to to reduce risk is to choose to hire a professional babysitter with spotless babysitter background.

A professional babysitter is simply a man or woman who is making babysitting or nanny care their major job. They may or may not have formal training, but should come with very positive references from past employers.

There are definitely advantages in employing a professional babysitter, some of which are described below:

* Professional babysitters are usually trained in every aspect of child rearing, including emergency first aid and CPR. They are also more aware of safety issues around the home and can help prevent issues before they occur.

* A professional babysitter has a greater sense of commitment to the job as compared to young teenagers who take up babysitting to earn some pocket money.

Moreover, they are more hands-on when it comes to handling children, and less surprised by how real-life babies and kids act. In fact, professional babysitters who have experience can be a great help to new parents.

They can give practical advice on how to feed, bathe, and take care of a small baby based n their own experience. For the new parent who is open to this advice and may not have other family around, this can be a very positive advantage.

* Professional babysitters have a natural liking for children, understand child psychology, and enjoy being with babies and kids. They are more capable of understanding your children and making them comfortable. This creates a healthy and stable environment at home even in your absence.

Here are a few tips before you hire any new babysitter:

1. Make sure to ask for multiple references and talk to all of them to make sure you hear consistent reports on the babysitter’s ability and trustworthiness.

2. You should also ask to see first aid and CPR certificates and proof of any related coursework that has been discussed during your interview.

3. Make sure to allow your child to play with the babysitter unsupervised and check in to see how things going. While your child won’t make the final decision on a new babysitter, don’t choose a babysitter that doesn’t "click" with your child.

4. Finally, trust your gut instinct. The babysitter has to integrate well with your family and parenting style. If you are hesitating for any reason, meet more candidates until you’re sure you have the right babysitter for you and your child.

Professional babysitters will definitely cost more, up to 50% or more higher than the local teenager helper, but you will enjoy greater peace of mind with an experienced pro, especially if you have a new baby. Read more about factors that impact babysitter rates.

Babysitter Background

June 17th, 2010 |

Summer is finally here and so are summer nanny jobs. There are a few things you must know before hiring a babysitter for your little one.

Babysitter BackgroundHow to hire a nanny, how to research the babysitter background, how to make sure the person is well-qualified for the job and deserves your trust. Few things can produce more anxiety in parents than hiring a stranger that will enter their home  and will spend time with their kids unsupervised by anyone.

Unfortunately you  don’t have a whole HR department working to ensure that the applicants have clean  criminal records and sufficient employment history.  But if you put enough time and effort in researching the babysitter background, you can get the job  done yourself. There are 10 things you can consider before hiring a nanny that will reduce your stress and will make you feel more comfortable with your choice

1 Define the type of caregiver you are looking for-personality characteristics, approximate age, experience, child rearing philosophies, flexibility of schedule, benefits and compensation that would be satisfactory for them. Make sure that the type of caregiver you are looking for will be appropriate for your family environment, kid’s personality, schedule and special needs.

2 Level of trust-how you know the applicant seems to be important for the initial level of trust you can have. Reputable nanny agencies that do pre-employment screening are expected to have more reliable nannies than private individuals posting their ads in the local newspaper.

People from your close circle of family or friends and even neighbors or fellow church goers inspire more trust than total strangers. However just because the applicant was referred  by a co-worker or a friend does not mean she/he should receive less scrutiny.  The babysitter background should be checked no matter who made the recommendation

3  The initial interview- the first impression of your new babysitter is important but it can also be very misleading. The candidate’s dependability, strengths and weaknesses could rarely be discerned from an initial interview. However if you got the feeling that they are nice, reliable, with good communication skills and you are still interested in using their service, then proceed to the next step-researching the babysitter background

4 Using employment application is very important with the initial interview. This is how you take all necessary information-name, date of birth, Social Security Number, driver’s

license number. A written permission to do a background check signed by the applicant is highly recommended. If the applicant refuses to cooperate, then  you should rule her/him out as a potential hire

5 The babysitter background- this is the time when you act as your own HR department that has to make sure the information provided is accurate and true. A few online   people search websites offer a very cheap way to do a thorough and in-depth background check by entering only the first and last name of the person of interest. Government Registry is one of the most respected sites providing access to millions of public and criminal records for only 39$ dollars. www.complete-background-check.info/

6 Second interview-if the background check is passed and the applicant has clean criminal record, then  you should proceed to the second interview when your children should be present.

Clearly formulating your job requirements, doing 2 interviews and conducting babysitter background investigation  between the interviews are important factors in the hiring process. Remember that you are about to let a new person have unsupervised control in your own home over your kids. So the only way to reduce your anxiety is to do the hiring process and the background check  the right way.

New Babysitter

June 14th, 2010 |

If you would like to make some extra money during this summer then check out summer nanny jobs offers. The only condition is that you love kids.

New BabysitterThe definition of the babysitter goes like the care of the child in the place of the child’s guardians or the parents who are capable enough to take care. But with the insufficient amount of time and their work load in the office makes it inevitable to continue the work at home and thus provide the baby with a babysitter and lessen the work of their parents.

Thus it keeps them aware of all the activities of the child and accordingly they direct the babysitter so that the guidance of the parents remains even when they are at their office. This needs to be done after maintaining a good relationship with the babysitter.

Relationship with the babysitter

In order to maintain or develop a good relation with the babysitter the parents need to mingle with them openly and tell all the necessary requirements that are needed to guide the child. Thus it becomes easier on the part of the babysitter as well as the parents to carry out the work properly. It needs good interaction with the babysitters for the proper management for the daily routine consisting of timing of the food, sleep and play time.

This will develop the relation ship among all the members of the family with the babysitter. They should be very careful about the necessities of the babysitter as she is related to the parents and in case of the need she can inform all the actions of the baby. They should not tell them rudely or direct them like a servant or hurt their religious sentiments and if she is of different caste she should not be discriminated in anyway.

The development of the good relation carries when they try to be open to each other. Keeping in touch makes them aware of all the actions. They are to be never deprived of anything and all their demands are to be fulfilled. The baby while getting closer to the babysitter comes in good relation with her. These are the basics when they are followed for the creation of the good relationship with the babysitter.

Hiring A Babysitter

June 11th, 2010 |

A lot of students will look for a summer nanny jobs. Therefore hiring a babysitter for your children should be done carefully.

Hiring A BabysitterThere are a couple of steps that should be followed before hiring a babysitter. You first and most importantly never hire a babysitter because they seem nice! Some of the nicest people turn out to be Serial Killers, or abusers of some kind, so don’t ever give a potential Babysitter the benefit of the doubt. Child molesters come in every age, size, and gender.

You should always ask for references. Check out all the references. Make sure to follow through and call to see if the references are credible and accurate. Sometimes the references are just fake from friends and family members. You as a parent want references from previous babysitting jobs.

The next step is an interview, before actually hiring anyone for job. Speck to the potential babysitter, have a nice conversation. Include your child; see how your child feels with the new babysitter.

Do you and your child feel comfortable with this person? Do they seem nice and friendly and genuinely caring? And finally ask the kids how they feel about the babysitter. Don’t ever force a babysitter on your child. Your child should be happy with the choice of person. Which will only facilitate the best care possible.

Once you find a good babysitter, make sure to go over the rules. Such as no smoking in front of the child or home if you desire. Make sure to tell them to limit phone use, so you’re your child is look after better. The child or children must be within view at all times. Make sure to go over the bed time, T.V. time and snakes allowed. Pretty much make sure to lay the rules down.

If you use a babysitter long term, make sure to see signs of abuse to be on the safe side. Has your child changed behavior recently? Does your child show signs of distress when you talk about having this babysitter come back?

Has your child’s eating habits changed? Any signs of bruises or cuts that you cant explain? If so confront the babysitter right away! And if necessary call the local Law Enforcement Department. Help keep your children safe and others as well. For more safety information and products visit [http://www.SafetyRus.com].

Find A Good Babysitter

April 23rd, 2010 |

The summer is approaching and you need to find a good babysitter to take care of your child while you are away. A lot of students apply for summer nanny jobs mainly to earn extra money during holidays.

Find A Good Babysitter

Finding a babysitter can be stressful but, to some, the time and effort allotted can be worth it when they have found the right babysitter that they can trust their child with. So what are the qualities that to look for in a babysitter?

Safety Skills – Based on recent statistics, major causes of death in children aged 1 year and up are accidents at home. It is crucial that a babysitter should know good safety skills.

There are some babysitters who completed first aid training and CPR classes. Let the potential babysitter bring his or her certificates during the interview if there are any.

Good References – These may come from families they used to work with. Phone in those families and ask if they have observed any quirks that the babysitter has such as late arrivals, dressing inappropriately or passing on unreliable stories or feedbacks about the children.

Experienced – It is important that your prospect has already done babysitting jobs. It is also a plus when the babysitter works with a family for a long period of time compared to babysitting sporadically in less than a month with different families.

Mature – Maturity doesn’t really have to concur with age but leaving your child to a highschool babysitter for more than 4 hours might not be good idea.

A mature babysitter must show sound judgment and appropriate responses on any given situation.

Other Qualities to look out are non-smoker, pleasant persona, neat and orderly.

Lastly, find a babysitter that’s right for you by going with your gut. Ask yourself this question: "Can you trust this stranger with your kid?"

Pay The Babysitter

April 22nd, 2010 |

Babysitting jobs are in demand especially during the summer holidays. The rates for summer nanny jobs are very different.

Pay The Babysitter

If you are a sitter and need to determine how much to charge your families or you are a parent who needs to know what a fair rate is, it’s easy if you follow these simple guidelines.

Some sitters charge as little as $3 per hour while others can charge as much as $20 per hour. The appropriate rate for babysitting services depends on five factors:

1) Age/amount of experience of the sitter

2) Your location

3) Number of children/pets

4) Age of children

5) Time of job/level of care expectation

How To Choose A Babysitter?

Most babysitters are teenagers ranging in age from 12-22. Going on age alone, normal rates for individuals aging 11-14 are $3-$5 per hour, adding $1 per hour per child. This rate increases by about $1 to $2 for teenagers aging 15-16 and then jumps to $8-$12 per hour for those who are 17 years-old and older and who have experience. Some individuals have CPR and first aid training, and these added skills allow the babysitter to charge more.

Your location also has a significant amount of influence on the rate. If you live in a large city, you can expect to pay a few dollars more per hour than individuals living 50 miles or more outside of an urban center. The farther out you live, the more the rates will change.

The number of children and their ages play a large role. It is a general rule to pay $1 more per hour per child, but if you have three kids under the age of five, you might be expected to pay a slightly higher rate because they require more attention. Pet care should also be considered in the price if you are going to ask the sitter to groom, walk, or feed your dog or cat.

Lastly, the length of the job and the duties you expect your sitter to complete also go into the price. If you need the babysitter to drive the kids to a birthday party, want her to take them to a movie, or fix dinner, you need to compensate for her time accordingly. Reimburse her for any expenses and extra duties you ask of her.

Considering these above guidelines, here are two extreme examples. If a 12-year-old sitter were watching your 6-year-old for three hours on a weekend afternoon in a rural area, it would be appropriate to pay her $4 per hour.

On the other hand, if you have three children, live in New York City, and hire a CPR-trained college student from the hours of 6 PM to 2 AM, expect to pay her around $15-$20 per hour.

If you still are unsure, try to ask other mothers living in your neighborhood what they pay for their babysitter. Always talk to the sitter before she sits for you to determine her babysitting rates so that you can both come to an agreement on something that is fair.

How To Choose A Babysitter

April 21st, 2010 |

Many students are looking for summer nanny jobs to make extra money. Therefore you have to be very careful when choosing a babysitter for your child. Here are some tips on how to choose a good babysitter.

How To Choose A Babysitter

Someone skilled. Parents will feel better about leaving their children with you if you’ve taken a babysitting course that includes First Aid and CPR training. A babysitting course is an excellent thing to have on your babysitting resume!

Someone trustworthy. Of course, a parent isn’t going to leave their baby or child with someone they don’t feel 100 percent comfortable with. If you come across as even a teeny bit irresponsible, they won’t hire you to babysit.

Things like being on time, listening to all instructions and coming across as mature and responsible are extremely important if you want to get a babysitting job.

Someone who is reliable. If a parent has to leave three messages before you call them back, or you say "no" to babysitting jobs too many times to go out with your friends, they’re going to realize you aren’t very reliable.

Someone who enjoys working with kids. Parents want to get an idea of how you’ll interact with their children, so be prepared to answer questions about why you want to babysit and what kinds of activities you might do with them before they give you a babysitting job.

Someone who can handle difficult situations. Parents may ask you questions about how you’ll deal with everything from a temper tantrum to a stranger at the door to a fire in the kitchen.

A babysitting course will go over many different emergency situations and help you learn how to confidently deal with them and prevent you to become a bad babysitter.

It isn’t always easy to tell if you have a bad sitter, because it is easy for a lazy or irresponsible one to put on a good front when talking to you. So you need to know the signs of a bad babysitter so you can find them out as soon as possible.

Babysitting Tips

1. Your sitter is not punctual. This is more important than you may think. Punctuality is a sign of being responsible.

Sure, there are times when you cannot help being late because of traffic or what have you, but if your sitter is habitually late, she is irresponsible. And irresponsible sitters are not good sitters.

2. Your child is not happy when he or she knows the sitter is coming or when you talk about her. If your child looks fearful or reacts in fear over the sitter, you can be sure something is wrong. Babysitters should be lovable and loved by your child. If she is a good one, your child will be happy to see her once your child gets to know her.

3. Your child has become anxious or nervous since you started using your sitter. This is another bad sign; although there may be other reasons your child may be acting like this. If your child seems anxious or nervous, it is a signal that your sitter may be the reason.

4. Your sitter does not want to talk about what she and your child did while you were gone. Every parent wants to know how things went when they get home…in detail. If your sitter seems to avoid telling you or is very vague about the babysitting session that can be a sign that she is not doing her job.

5. Your babysitter does not do the things you asked her to do while watching your child. Most parents leave a list of important thing to do for the sitter.

If your sitter wants to do her own thing and ignores your things, that is bad. She is supposed to be working for you and supporting your efforts to raise your child.

6. Too many booboos (accidents). Accidents and booboos do happen, but they should be few and far between while being watched by a babysitter. After all, watching your child is her whole responsibility while you are away. And if she is doing her job and not chatting on her cell phone most of the time, then very few accidents will happen. Of course, accidents happen even when your child is with you, but they still should be very seldom when with a sitter.

7. Your child is dirty and your home is messy when you get home. This should seldom, if ever happen. Of course you do not hire a babysitter to clean your house, and messes can happen right before you get home.

But, if she is conscientious, she will usually have both your child and your home looking as good as when you left when you get home.

Babysitting Tips

Even if you love children there are some things you have to know before applying for summer nanny jobs.

Babysitting Tips

First-time babysitters should be asking you for babysitting tips if they are genuinely willing to care for your child. Babysitters who make inquiries, especially regarding the specific care of your child, indicate that they want to do their job the best they could. So what questions should you expect from the babysitter you hire? Let’s find out.

Find a babysitter. Even when you’re still conducting interviews with potential babysitters, observe the questions they ask you. Interviews with parents should be an opportunity for the candidates to make inquiries and obtain some babysitting tips. Handle your interviews at home so that they can meet the children.

This should be a chance for them to ask you questions such as when your 9-year old should start doing his homework, at what times your 1-year old should take a nap, or if any of your kids is allergic to certain foods.

Below are some inquiries your potential babysitter should ask you:

-How many children will I be caring for?

-How old are they and what are their names?

-What are the usual routines in the household (i.e.: when is bedtime)?

-What are the house rules?

-What are the kids interested in?

-What are the chores you expect your kids to do and would you like me to help ascertain these are accomplished?

-What special requirements do your children have? Do they have any medical condition or allergies I should know about?

-Will I be doing extra tasks such as cooking for the kids, tutoring and some cleaning?

-Who do I call in case of an urgent situation?

-Would you like me to answer the phone?

-Are there any parts of the home that are off-limits to the kids?

-Are there any pets and will I be feeding them at certain times?

Parents should expect these kinds of inquiries if they want to hire the best sitters for their family. These questions help determine which sitter is more willing to do a good job, and they also give you an opportunity to provide first-time sitters with babysitting tips.
